Finding Your Equipment Model & Serial Numbers

When ordering parts or scheduling service for your lawn mower, snow blower, or other outdoor power products, having your model and serial numbers ready can save time and help ensure you get the correct parts and service information.

At Cutters Mark of Minnetonka, Carpenters Small Engine, Boyd's Outdoor Power, and Cutters Mark of Lindstrom, we service and sell a variety of products, including Toro lawn mowers, Toro snow blowers, Gravely zero-turn mowers, Ariens zero-turn mowers, Ariens snow blowers, and more. Knowing where to find your equipment's identification numbers can make the parts and service process easier.

Why Identification Numbers Matter

Lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other powered tools can change from one production year or model revision to another. Even models with the same name may use different parts depending on when they were manufactured.

  • Frame vs. Engine: Most powered equipment has identification information for both the main unit and the engine. The frame or chassis may be made by a manufacturer such as Toro, Ariens, or Gravely, while the engine may be made by Kawasaki or another manufacturer. Each may have its own identification tag or numbers.

  • Production Changes: Manufacturers may update components such as wiring harnesses, deck belts, drive cables, and spindles during production without changing the primary model name.

  • Model vs. Serial Number: The model number identifies the general design or model. The serial number identifies the specific unit and can help determine which parts fit that particular lawn mower, snow blower, or tool.

Rule of Thumb: Parts related to the frame or chassis, such as deck belts, wheels, cables, and handles, may require the model and serial numbers from the main unit. Engine-related parts, such as spark plugs, air filters, and starters, may require the engine's model and serial numbers.

If you purchased your lawn mower, snow blower, or other product from a dealership, they may have your model and serial numbers on file. It's worth checking with the original selling dealer before searching for the information yourself. You can also ask your service shop to keep these numbers on file for future parts orders and repairs.

Where Should You Look?

Riding Mowers & Zero-Turns (ZTRs)

  • Frame Tag: Commonly located beneath the flip-up seat, on the rear frame near the hitch, or along the lower frame rails near the rear tires.

  • Engine Tag: Often located on the valve cover, engine shroud, or blower housing.

Walk-Behind & Stand-On Mowers

  • Equipment Tag: Look on the main deck shell, behind the discharge chute, or on the lower upright support arms near the operator controls.

  • Engine Tag: Often located on the top of the engine shroud or near the starter recoil assembly.

Snow Blowers

Whether you own a Toro snow blower, Ariens snow blower, or another brand, the identification tag is generally attached to the main unit.

  • Equipment Tag: Common locations include the rear of the auger housing, the frame near the wheels or engine, or the area beneath the discharge chute.

  • Engine Tag: Usually located on the engine shroud near the recoil starter.

Handheld Power Tools

For chainsaws, trimmers, and leaf blowers, the model and serial numbers may be located in several places.

  • Identification Sticker: Check the main housing, near the handle, or around the fuel tank.

  • Stamped Numbers: On some chainsaws and trimmers, including ECHO models, identification numbers may be stamped into the metal housing or crankcase near the guide bar or other engine components. If you have trouble locating them, ask your service shop for help and see if they can keep the numbers on file.

Save Your Equipment Numbers

The easiest way to avoid delays when you need parts or service is to record your identification details before you need them.

  1. Take Clear Photos: Take well-lit photos of the frame tag, engine tag, and any other identification tags.

  2. Store Them Digitally: Create a dedicated folder on your phone or save the photos to a cloud storage service such as Google Drive, iCloud, or Dropbox.

  3. Keep a Written Record: Write the model and serial numbers in your owner's manual, maintenance records, or a notebook.
